Yes, of course you can sew it using a sewing machine if you prefer. I'm not judging :-) But for myself, I have come to love the peaceful feeling of sewing my clothing and accessories by hand. Also I find it easier to add creative personal details to the project.
This is also a good project to use your already stitched sashiko fabrics such as the 4" coasters and 12" samplers.
