Sashiko Stitched Hippari Sewing Pattern

A comfortable easy to wear tied Japanese style work coat with a light lining and sashiko stitching.

The pattern is printed with full size pattern pieces on sewing tissue. 

The sashiko stitching design is printed onto the pattern pieces.

 You will have to transfer the sashiko design on to your fabric with either sewing carbon or by using the fusible interfacing method. Instructions for how to do that method of transfer are included the pattern. I recommend this method of transfer because the stitching design will not fade off from handling as your stitching progresses. But if you feel it is not a method for you and you use sewing carbon to do the transfer, I suggest you draw over the pattern with an iron away fabric marking pen or pencil.

This pattern could be adapted to make a boro style jacket by sewing it from your pre-stitched boro cloth. 

This is the coat I wore at shows. It is easy to make and comfortable to wear.  There are inside ties to adjust the width and to keep it closed properly.  It is lined with a lightweight fabric.  The finished size length is 26".  It is a 'one size' pattern, (I think its about a size 10.  I am 5' tall and the length is right for me, you could quite easily lengthen it as the side seams are straight.) 

This is an example of the functional as well as beautiful nature of Sashiko. I throw this coat in the washer and dryer after every show, take it out slightly damp and press it. True I have a little thread wear on the front from loading and unloading boxes and bins into the truck at shows, but it stays worth the time it took to make.

I have also made this jacket from dyed yarn woven cotton (which you can find on this website) for comfortable everyday wear.

Materials:

• 2.5 meters 45" wide Cotton fabric suitable for sashiko stitching (lightweight cotton, tsumugi cotton, Japanese dyed yarn cottons)
• 2.5 meters Lightweight (cotton) lining fabric 
• 3 yards (36" wide) White fusible featherweight non-woven interfacing OR Olympus sewing carbon
• sashiko thread & needle (I like Olympus 20 meter skeins and their needles, but any of the sashiko threads and needles you prefer will work fine, also I will guess 100 meters will do this project, but this my best guess only)
