Sho-chiku-bai means pine, bamboo and plum. These three plants are often found together in Japanese art and referred to as "the three companions of cold". Together they are an auspicious motif representing longevity, resilience and renewal.

  • Matsu (松) — Pine: longevity, endurance, steadfastness; it stays green through winter.
  • Take (竹) — Bamboo: resilience, strength and flexibility; it bends without breaking and grows vigorously.
  • Ume (梅) — Plum blossom: perseverance, renewal and hope; it blossoms very early, often while winter is still present.

This placemat kit includes both classic traditional patterns and newly designed motifs inspired by tradition.
