Classic cloth for sashiko stitching, this cloth was dyed by hand in small batches of botanical (plant) indigo. These quarter meter pieces are available in 3 shades. 100% cotton.

The shade of blue in indigo dyed cloth is made by dipping the cloth into the indigo vat, then allowing it to oxidise in the air, then re-dipping. The more dips the darker the blue becomes until it eventually reaches the most valuable very dark blue black colour.

(Please be aware no two batch colours will be exactly the same shade.)

This batch of fabric was hand dyed by skilled artisans.   It came to me from the dyers still smelling quite strongly of the fermenting indigo plant used for dying (which is good because it allowed more aging and fixing time).  I have washed it to remove the oder and unfixed dye, and to soften it.  Itt is ready to use and enjoy.

  • Each piece is 19" x 21" (50cm x 55cm) 100 % cotton fabric, medium weight
  • It is not hard-pressed or starched like factory made cloth, you can iron it smooth if you want that finish.
  • It is good quality even weave 100 % cotton fabric
  • The lighter blue cloth will be are softer than the dark blue. This is caused by the amount of indigo being held in the fibres.
  • It is machine washable.
  • Indigo plant dyed cloth gets more beautiful over time as it fades down. This has to do with the way the dye bonds to the cloth and is often the reason for choosing it. Fade down will take multiple washings for this batch of dying.
  • This is an exceptional fabric for your sashiko stitching but you can use it for other stitching and sewing projects.
