The interaction between a sashiko thread and the fabric it is stitched on is a valued characteristic of sashiko stitching. Olympus brand sashiko threads are intentionally made with a open matte finish which, when washed, enables your stitches to plump up like fat little grains of rice. The bit of soft fuzziness will disappear as the fibres bond to each other and the fabric.

This Olympus 20 meter skein thread is about the thickness of #5 perle cotton and is often used as the middle thickness standard for sashiko threads.
