Yarn dyed fabrics have their yarn dyed before the fabric is woven. This means the colour is woven into the fabric rather than printed onto the surface. Often they have a few yarns of various weights , colours or textures woven into them to create interest.
Their distinctive look and feel is the result of the combination of this manufacturing process, plus the Japanese taupe colour aesthetic made famous by the master quilt designer Yoko Saito. These complex taupe colours have unusual depth and inspire calm relaxed feeling.
Taupe colours tend to get along with each other well so planning a project and combining them is easier than with primary and secondary colours.
