Made by the Olympus in Japan, who have manufactured quality sashiko products for many decades, this is a dependable washable and colourfast sashiko thread.
Olympus sasiko thread less tightly woven than many other brands. This is intentional, it allows the thread to plump up like a little grain of rice when washed, and at the same time it allows it to connect itself into the fabric. This interaction between the thread and the fabric is part of the reason for the beauty of well washed sashiko stitched fabrics.
So if the bit of fuzziness isn't your favourite thing, wash and dry your stitching with your next load of towels! (But do finish the edges first, raw edges will fray :-)
Sashiko thread is not stranded like embroidery thread, you use the whole thread for your stitching. Just cut it into a comfortable length, usually about 20" long, thread your needle, and stitch.
Olympus 20 meter sashiko thread skeins have a soft matt finish and are about the weight of #5 perle cotton.
And a final note for new stitchers: These Sashiko threads are fat so as you stitch you are adding a lot of extra thickness between the threads of your fabric. This is going to cause the fabric to tighten up and become unable to lay flat unless you leave some slack in your stitching. A good way for beginners to do this is to leave a little loop (about 1/4" ) on the back of your stitching every 4 to 6 inches, and when you turn corners.
