This kit is an excellent way to start stitching hitome-sashi style sashiko.
The book will show you how to draw out & stitch almost endless sashiko hitome-zashi patterns on any fabric you want to stitch. This is perfect if you are using it on clothing or for mending or as part of of any sewing project. The grid fabric and wash away marker in the kit will save you from drawing out the grid step yourself. You can choose a pattern and start stitching your first design while you read and learn from the book.
Everything you need to do this is in the kit:
- The book Colourful Sashiko by Sashikonami. How to draw out and stitch hitomezashi and 49 complete projects you can use it on.
- one 12" X 12" Olympus sarashi-momen grid cotton fabric for sashiko stitching. This fabric is marked in a 5mm grid pattern with wash out ink so that you can draw your design onto the fabric with the wash out marker, and when finished wash away all the markings leaving only your stitching.
- one blue heat erase fabric marker (this is the 'low waste style, it reduces plastic by eliminating the barrel. Use it as it is and cap it each time you put it down)
- one package of two of Olympus sashiko needles
- and 40 meters of Olympus sashiko thread

Hitome-sashi is a style of sashiko. Also called single stitch sashiko, it is very easy to stitch. The patterns develop by single stitches being stitched across the pattern first all the vertical, then all the horizontal, then any diagonal lines. It is very relaxing stitching. You may also see it spelled hitome-zashi or hitomezashi.
