Originating as a means of mending and reinforcing peasant garments. Today sashiko stitchers expand their sashiko stitching to include more colours and modern designs, but the classic designs endure. Sashiko is becoming very popular combined with other techniques on surface design projects.

Although they look complex, sashiko designs are quick, easy, and inexpensive to complete.  Because they need only thread and needle, they make excellent  relaxation and travel projects
