Sashiko & Boro Stencils
Originally, in the 1600's, Sashiko stitching was a mending technique. Women used it to layer fabrics over worn and torn areas of family clothing and household fabrics. The stitched Sashiko designs, especially the dense hitome-zashi style designs, made these mends strong as well as beautiful.
Many of the stencils in this section are hitome-sashi designs, others are traditional sashiko designs. I hope you feel a connection to the women who stitched and repaired cloth in the past as you stitch your own projects.
